Afternoon in the Sun: Riley Keough, Elizabeth Olsen, and Rose Byrne at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic

Just as New York’s social calendar reserves the first Monday in May for the Met Gala, the first Saturday in June is for the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. The annual match and champagne extravaganza drew a wide range of guests to Liberty State Park on Saturday, from actors like Michael B. Jordan and Riley Keough to models like Jessica Hart to designers like Gigi Burris and Lulu Frost’s Lisa Salzer. There was a sense that people had come from far and wide for the festivities. Equestrian enthusiasts in town from Middleburg, Virginia, and Wellington, Florida, chatted about whose horses were in the day’s match, whether they had a horse on the Black Watch or the Veuve Clicquot team, and so forth.

As guests arrived and made their way from the ferry to the pitch, Elizabeth Olsen confided that she had never actually been to a polo match. “I don’t understand polo—I know!” she said with a laugh. “I actually go to horse races a lot. I grew up going to Santa Anita and Del Mar, but this is all brand new. I’d love to find out where the horses are at some point so I can go up and touch them.”

The One Show Announces 2016 Winners

The One Club (www.oneclub.org) announced today the winners for the 43rd Annual One Show Awards, hosted by Ellie Kemper, star of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” There were 248 Pencils awarded in film, interactive, cross-platform, IP, mobile, social, UX/UI and radio at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City (556 overall), but it was REI’s #OptOutside campaign that won Best of Show.

“This is an amazing honor. The One Show represents the best that the advertising world has to offer and we couldn’t be prouder,” said Will McGinness, Partner, Executive Creative Director, Venables Bell & Partners. “This obviously wouldn’t have been possible without our incredibly brave clients who were willing to take their beliefs as a company and act on them in such a bold way. #OptOutside was an idea that came from the core of who they are as a company and ended up transcending marketing into an actual movement. Which is something you rarely see.”

REI’s ‘#OptOutside’ Campaign Takes Best of Show at the One Show

REI’s “#OptOutside” campaign, in which the retailer decided to close its doors on Black Friday and instead encouraged consumers and its own employees to embrace the outdoors, won Best of Show at the One Club’s 2016 One Show. The award was announced at the One Show’s final awards ceremony, hosted by “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” actress Ellie Kemper at Cipriani Wall Street on Friday Night.

As part of the campaign, the retailer gave each of its 12,000 employees a paid day off and even suspended e-commerce. The idea was boosted by a campaign created out of Venables, Bell & Partners, as well as Edelman and Spark (now known as Mediavest/Spark.) It included a microsite, social elements and some clever films. One layered gorgeous mountainscapes against the chatter of news broadcasters banging on about busiest shopping day of the year, while another showed CEO Jerry Strizke imploring viewers to join the “Opt Outside” movement as he sits at his desk — which turns out to be atop a gorgeous Washington State peak.
